EP 08 · My Lord, Holy
Sunrise Over the Island, Hawaii — A Sailboat Pressing On
Early morning on a Hawaiian beach: an island across the water, first light on the waves, and one sailboat already out there, sailing on.

First Light Over the Island
In Hawaii, we were up early, standing on the sand before the day had properly begun. Across the water the island lay dark under a cap of cloud, while the sky above it softened from grey to pink to gold. Small waves rolled in and folded quietly onto the beach. A few boats sat on the water — and one of them was a sailboat, already out on the open sea.

I kept watching that sailboat. Out there in the wind and the waves, it looked as if it had come through the whole night — a long night of wind and washing seas — and here it was at daybreak, still pressing on toward the morning sun. Whatever the night had been, it had not stopped. It was sailing into the light.
That is a picture worth carrying into a day. Nights come to all of us. But morning comes too, and mercy is made new with it. Like that sailboat, we get to keep going — into the light.
