EP 05 · My Hong Kong
Small Moments I Didn't Plan
Before Hong Kong I made a list. What I remember most was never on it — an egret, a cloudy harbour, horse statues, a plaque I finally read.
Before Hong Kong I made a list. What I remember most was never on it — egret, cloudy day, horse statues, spiral tower, and the Victoria Harbour plaque I finally read carefully. These are the small moments you cannot plan.
01 — Off the list

Guides tell you where to go. They do not tell you which glance will make you stop. This episode is not the attractions on a list — it is the moments that bumped into me off the list.
02 — Egret on the steps
An egret stood on the stone steps by the sea, not moving. It looked at the water more calmly than I did. I watched it through my phone for a long time — and suddenly the schedule on my list felt less important.
03 — Cloudy harbour

That day the harbour was cloudy. No postcard blue sky — the water looked veiled, boats and docks softened. Later I learned: overcast Victoria Harbour has another kind of beauty. Visitor guides rarely mention it.
04 — Red-sail junk

A red-sail junk drifted past, dense housing towers behind it. Old and new packed into one frame, neither giving way. That contrast is not something you plan — you bump into it.
05 — Horses on the corner

Two horse statues appeared on a corner — one red, one brown — standing straight as if on guard. No queue for photos, no plaque explaining who they are. That kind of encounter makes you look twice.
06 — Spiral tower

Look up at the spiral tower from another angle and it feels almost alien. The same building from far away and from under your chin are two different things. Sometimes the view is fine — you just have not found the angle.
07 — The plaque I finally read

The plaque says Victoria Harbour. I had passed it a hundred times before I read it carefully. The red-and-white life ring on the rail photographs well. After living here I got it: familiar places deserve a second look.
08 — Closing

None of these moments can be planned, and none come back the same way. So now I leave blank space on the schedule — for egret, for cloudy days, for horses that appear on a corner. The part of Hong Kong that moves you most often hides in that blank space.

- EP 04Hong Kong in MotionHong Kong is small, but I was on the road every day. Bridges, ferries, the waterfront walk — how I actually crossed the city.
- EP 05Small Moments I Didn't PlanBefore Hong Kong I made a list. What I remember most was never on it — an egret, a cloudy harbour, horse statues, a plaque I finally read.
