EP 01 · 100 Days of Morning Prayer
Day 1 — How Great Is Our God
The first of one hundred mornings: a long shoreline at dawn, boats resting at anchor, and Psalm 143:8.

Day 1's shoreline at dawn, a still from the morning's film.
Day 1 opens on a long shoreline before the sun is up. The sand is still cool-toned and empty, and small waves fold onto the beach one after another, the way they have all night. Out on the water, sailboats sit at anchor. Across the bay, a mountain ridge holds the last of the night. Then the sky does what it does every morning, and somehow never gets old: grey to silver, silver to rose. The film takes twenty seconds of it. It is enough.
Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee. — Psalm 143:8
If you ever go to watch a sunrise like this one, go early. The colours in this film are dawn colours — the twenty to thirty minutes before the sun itself appears, when the light arrives before the sun does. Stand where the shoreline runs long and open, face the water, and wait. The song under this first morning is How Great Is Our God, the first song of the rotation, sung the way a congregation sings it. Tomorrow, Day 2, same time — 7:40 a.m. — the morning opens with King Of Kings.
Why one hundred mornings? Because a morning is the smallest unit of starting again, and I wanted to mark that — quietly, without making a show of it. These hundred mornings are kept in loving memory of Mom. The Lord has given us one more day of life; this series is my way of not letting a single one of the next hundred days slip by unthanked.
