First time in Prague?

Prague is a book bound in stone — Gothic spires, a castle on the hill, and a bridge that has carried six centuries of footsteps. The Old Town rewards early risers and night walkers; the middle of the day belongs to the crowds. Beer here costs less than water, and the locals are quietly proud of it. Our take, our own judgment with no ranking cited: safety 9/10 (very safe; the old town is fine at night, watch for pickpockets in tourist areas, and mind drunk crowds on Dlouhá late at night), happiness 8/10 (old town, castle and beer-hall culture make life taste good; the long grey winter costs it a point), cost 5/10 (one of the cheapest capitals in Central Europe; beer cheaper than water, tourist prices only around the Old Town Square).

3 ways to experience Prague

None of them is “the best”. Each one gives up something to get something else.

Prague Essentials

Old Town morning, the bridge at the right hour, then the castle hill for the afternoon. It crosses the river once and never looks back.

Why this route

  • • It moves old town → bridge → castle hill, always forward, crossing the river exactly once.
  • • The bridge is timed before midday and the castle gets the afternoon light — the two big sights each get their best hour.
  • • One paid interior, not three. The day keeps a decision instead of becoming a ticket stub collection.

Good for

  • First visit with one full day
  • Travellers who want the icons in the right order
  • Walkers — the whole day is on foot

Trade-offs

  • • No Jewish Quarter. Josefov needs its own slow morning — do not squeeze it into this day.
  • • No beer hall. The evening is open — add U Fleků yourself if the legs still work.
  • • The castle climb is real. Tired knees should take the tram up and walk down.
