10 Cities to Visit in Spring — Our Picks

Our spring pick: ten cities at their best when the world wakes up — chosen by us, timing stated, all safe to actually visit.

Amsterdam canal in spring with tulip beds along the water and gabled houses

Spring is the one season you have to chase. Summer waits for you, autumn comes to you, winter you hide from — but spring moves, a slow wave of green and white and pink rolling north, and if you mistime it by a week you get the rain instead of the blossom. This list is our chase plan: ten cities, each with the moment spring peaks and what the chase costs you. We picked them, we state the gamble plainly, and the order is reading order, not a ranking. Every city here is one we consider genuinely safe; anything war-torn, reckless, or accident-prone never makes our lists.

01 · Amsterdam, Netherlands — tulips along the canals

Amsterdam in spring is the city at its most Dutch: the canals lined with tulips, the parks turning green, and the famous flower fields a short train ride away at Keukenhof. Walk the canals in the morning, rent a bike for the afternoon, and time your trip for mid-April if the tulips are the point — that is when the fields peak. The gamble is the weather: April can still turn grey and wet, so pack a layer and keep one indoor day — the museums are world-class anyway. See our Amsterdam city page before you book.

02 · Kyoto, Japan — ten days of cherry blossom

Kyoto owns spring the way it owns autumn: for about ten days, the city's temples and canals disappear under cherry blossom, and the whole place slows down to look. Walk the Philosopher's Path early in the morning, picnic under the trees at Maruyama Park, and go on a weekday — the famous spots are a slow shuffle on weekends. The gamble is the date: peak bloom moves by days, not weeks, so watch the blossom forecasts and keep your plans flexible. If Kyoto and Seoul are both calling you, our /compare/kyoto-vs-seoul page is the honest tiebreaker. See our Kyoto city page before you book.

03 · Paris, France — chestnut blossoms on the Seine

Paris in spring is the city the songs are about: chestnut trees flowering along the Seine, the gardens — Tuileries, Luxembourg — full of the first picnics of the year, and café terraces filling up again. Walk the river quays in the morning, take the gardens in the afternoon, and let one evening be just a long dinner outside. The gamble is the rain: April showers are real here, so keep a museum in reserve and never trust a blue morning sky. If Paris and Kyoto are both on your shortlist, our /compare/paris-vs-kyoto page settles the blossom question. See our Paris city page before you book.

04 · Rome, Italy — the city before the heat

Rome in spring is the city before the heat: mild days, the piazzas full but not packed, and outdoor dinners that start while it is still light. Do the Forum and the Colosseum in the morning with tickets booked ahead, then let the afternoons be long lunches and church-hopping in the shade. The gamble is Easter: Holy Week fills the city and the prices with it, so either book months ahead or come in late April and May instead. If Rome and Paris are both tempting you, our /compare/rome-vs-paris page is the honest tiebreaker. See our Rome city page before you book.

05 · Lisbon, Portugal — spring gets here first

Lisbon in spring gets there first: while northern Europe is still deciding, Lisbon is already warm, the light already sharp, the hilltop viewpoints already worth the climb. Ride the trams in the morning, walk the Alfama before the heat, and finish the day by the river as the light goes gold. The gamble is the calendar: come too early and you get the rain; come in late May and the jacarandas turn whole streets purple. If Lisbon and Paris are both on your mind, our /compare/paris-vs-lisbon page compares the two springs honestly. See our Lisbon city page before you book.

06 · Vienna, Austria — the city wakes up politely

Vienna in spring is the city waking up politely: the Easter markets open, the concert halls fill again, and the Prater's avenues turn green. Take an evening concert, walk the palace gardens in the afternoon, and let the coffee houses handle the grey mornings — they invented sitting still. The gamble is the swing: a warm week can turn cold overnight, so pack layers, not one heavy coat. This one appears in our list only; we have not built a city page for it yet — run your dates through /decide before booking.

07 · Prague, Czechia — the old town at its kindest

Prague in spring is the old town at its kindest: the castle hill glowing in soft light, Petrin hill in blossom, and the summer crowds not yet arrived. Cross Charles Bridge at dawn, climb to the castle before the tour buses, and save the river for the golden hour. The gamble is the weekend: day-trippers still flood the centre on Saturdays, so stay overnight and own the mornings. This one appears in our list only; we have not built a city page for it yet — run your dates through /decide before booking.

08 · Seoul, South Korea — the city picnics

Seoul does cherry blossom season with total commitment: Yeouido's riverside parks turn white and pink, the palaces frame themselves in blossom, and the whole city picnics. Go on a weekday morning, walk the old city walls in the afternoon, and warm up with street food when the evening cools. The gamble is the same as Kyoto's — peak bloom is a moving target — so watch the forecasts, and if you are choosing between the two blossom capitals, our /compare/kyoto-vs-seoul page settles it. See our Seoul city page before you book.

09 · Tokyo, Japan — the metropolis on best behaviour

Tokyo in spring is the city at its most photographed and, briefly, its most traditional: office workers picnicking under the blossoms at Ueno, lanterns lit at night in the big parks, the whole metropolis on its best behaviour. Arrive at the famous spots at opening time, and save one evening for the illuminated blossoms — the yozakura. The gamble is the crowd: everyone in Japan has the same idea in the same week, so book the stay early and do the big parks on weekday mornings. Torn between Tokyo and Kyoto? Our /compare/tokyo-vs-kyoto page is the honest tiebreaker. See our Tokyo city page before you book.

10 · Sydney, Australia — our honest exception

Sydney is our honest exception: March to May is autumn here, not spring — but it is the Sydney we would pick. The summer heat breaks, the harbour turns sharp and blue, the crowds thin, and the coastal walks are at their best. Walk Bondi to Coogee in the morning, take the ferry to Manly in the afternoon, and eat outside every chance you get. The gamble is the shoulder-season rain: a wet week can still arrive, so keep one flexible day and never plan the harbour picnic first. If Sydney and Tokyo are both on your list, our /compare/sydney-vs-tokyo page compares the two seasons honestly. See our Sydney city page before you book.

Hidden gem

Chase the bloom, not the date. Spring keeps nature's calendar, not yours — pick the city for its peak week, then fit your dates around it, not the other way round.

Lesson

One week is everything in spring. Bloom forecasts move by days, so book the flexible rate, watch the reports, and keep one spare day to shift.

Would return

Go early, go weekday. The famous blossom spots are a joy at eight in the morning and a queue by noon — the early traveller gets spring to themselves.
