First time in Shanghai?

Shanghai is easiest to read as a river city: old trading-house facades on the Bund, the Lujiazui skyline across the Huangpu, and west-side neighbourhoods where temples, lane houses and cafés sit inside the modern city. A strong first visit keeps the river simple, then saves the French Concession and Jing'an for a slower day.

3 ways to experience Shanghai

None of them is “the best”. Each one gives up something to get something else.

Shanghai Essentials

Start with People's Square and the museum, walk Nanjing Road to the Bund, then fold through Yu Garden before crossing to Lujiazui for the high view.

Why this route

  • • It follows Shanghai's clearest first-day line: civic centre → shopping street → Bund → old city → skyline.
  • • Most movement is on foot until the river crossing, so the city scale becomes readable.
  • • It gives both skyline directions: from the Bund toward Pudong, then from Pudong back over the city.

Good for

  • A first visit with one full day
  • Landmarks before neighbourhoods
  • Travellers okay with one long walking day

Trade-offs

  • • The museum can eat time. If you go deep, cut Yu Garden short rather than rush the Bund.
  • • Nanjing Road and Yu Garden get crowded. Start early or accept slow walking.
  • • Bad visibility weakens the Shanghai Tower stop; swap to Oriental Pearl or stay river-level if the sky is grey.
