First time in Lisbon?

Lisbon is a hill city on the Tagus: Baixa gives the flat grid, Alfama gives the old slopes, Belem stretches west along the river, and Parque das Nacoes sits far east on the Expo waterfront. A good first visit uses trams, metro or taxis for the long gaps, then saves walking for the lanes, viewpoints and riverfronts that deserve it.

3 ways to experience Lisbon

None of them is “the best”. Each one gives up something to get something else.

Lisbon Essentials

Start on the Baixa river square, climb through the cathedral and castle side of Alfama, then transfer west to Belem for the monastery and tower.

Why this route

  • • It shows Lisbon's basic shape: river square, hill neighbourhood, viewpoint, then the western monuments.
  • • The route moves forward by cluster: Baixa -> Alfama -> Graca -> Belem.
  • • The long Belem hop is transport, not a fake scenic walk.

Good for

  • First Lisbon visit
  • History and viewpoints
  • Travellers who can handle hills

Trade-offs

  • • This is a long day with hills. Skip Graca or shorten Belem if heat or knees push back.
  • • No Oceanario and no deep museum day; those belong to the Local route.
  • • Belem is not beside Baixa. Budget the westbound transfer instead of hoping it feels close.
